Why celebrate Christ's birth instead of His conception?
Since life begins at conception, why do we focus on
celebrating the Birth of Christ, rather than His Conception? After
all, from a Catholic perspective, the Incarnation really occurs
about nine months prior to Christmas. Indeed, pro-life movements
around the world have begun using March 25 as a day celebrating the
life of the unborn, during the Feast of the Annunciation, nine
months before Christmas. And why do we pro-lifers throw birthday
parties, instead of conception-day parties? Why do we speak of
being born again? Why measure our ages from the date of our birth,
instead of conception?

A Dangerous Reflection on the Feast of the Holy Innocents
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Innocents, all those
young boys in and around Bethlehem, two and under, whom Herod had
massacred in order to kill Jesus Christ. We do not know their
number or their names, but the Church lists them as among her
martyrs. Some have disputed that they should be called martyrs
since they did not submit freely for the sake of Christ but were
merely victims of Herod. Nevertheless, the Church has long numbered
them in her ranks of martyrs.

Anchorman Scott Pelley from CBS News...
Mass is supposed to be a heavenly banquet, not a steady diet of self-congratulation. So please, hold your applause...
At the end of the Christmas Eve Mass at my parish last year,

be here next week, and I didnt ask his permission, because I knew

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed at Christmas Mass
: At a Nigerian Catholic church where a terror attack killed
35 people on Christmas, women tried to clean the sanctuary ahead of
Mass on Monday while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris.
Outside St. Theresa Catholic Church, crowds gathered among the
burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack
claimed by a radical Muslim sect and fearful that the group will
target more churches. Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The
Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials
gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating
the birth of Christ.

At this point, I see no reason to say that Boko Haram is a

Tonight at sunset, be sure to go outside and look west. Here's why...
: The action begins shortly before sunset. Around 4:30 pm to
5:00 pm local time, just as the sky is assuming its evening hue,
Venus will pop into view, glistening bright in the deepening
twilight. No more than 6 degrees to the right lies the crescent
Moon, exquisitely slender, grinning like the Cheshire cat with his
head cocked at humorous attention. This is a wonderful time to
look; there are very few sights in the heavens as splendid as Venus
and the Moon gathered close and surrounded by twilight blue.

Urbi et Orbi: To the City and the World
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and throughout the world!
Christ is born for us! Glory to God in the highest and peace on
earth to the men and women whom he loves. May all people hear an
echo of the message of Bethlehem which the Catholic Church repeats
in every continent, beyond the confines of every nation, language
and culture. The Son of the Virgin Mary is born for everyone; he is
the Saviour of all.

"It's Christmas!"
Ill never forget the first time I went to midnight Mass. It
was a few years ago, when our third child was still an infant. In
retrospect, it was not the best year for us to try this;
considering that we were already getting precious little sleep with
a three-month-old and two toddlers in the house, we would have been
better off going to one of the mid-morning Masses on Christmas day.
But Id never been to midnight Mass, and I really wanted to
experience it, so my husband and I made our way down to the church
an hour after we normally would have gone to sleep for the
night.

Approach God's birth with humility, Pope urges at Christmas Mass
: At his Christmas Eve Mass, Pope Benedict XVI invited those
celebrating the holiday to set aside our false certainties and
intellectual pride, and recognize God's appearance as a child. In
his sermon at St. Peter's Basilica, the Pope warned against the
bright lights of commercialism that hide the mystery of God's
humility as shown in his incarnation. Christmas, he said, calls
believers to dismount from the high-horse of supposedly
'enlightened' reason, to find the God who conceals himself in the
humility of a newborn baby.

Three texts from St. Augustine for our great feastday...
: What praise of the love of God we should express! What
thanks we should give! He loved us so that he through whom all time
was made for our sakes came to be in time; he who in his eternity
is older than the world became younger in age than many of his
servants; he who made man became man; he was created from a mother
he created; he was carried by hands he shaped, sucked breasts he
filled, and the Word without which human eloquence is dumb squalled
in a manger, dumb, unable to speak.

Simple Obedience
The Christmas story is filled with people who listen to God.
One of these people is Mary, who listens to God, and obeys him
despite the costs. She also does it with a serving heart. We read
about her immediate acceptance of Gods plan in Luke when Angel
Gabriel brings her a very important message. Obeying God seems so
easy in principle but putting obedience into action is often much
harder. So how can we be like Mary in our obedience to God?

Is Your Business Too Special for Credit Cards?
Sure, stores have to have credit card processing; people use
credit cards and debit cards most of the time when they shop, so
refusing to take cards is like turning customers away. What about
other kinds of businesses? Our first example is a Chinese drive
through restaurant. They have freshly cooked foods like Garlic
Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice and a drive up window, no seating.
Theyre special, and they dont take credit cards. Theres a sign on
the drive up window alerting people to the fact that they dont
accept cards, and during a recent visit we saw two cars ahead of us
drive off without they food theyd ordered, because they expected to
be able to pay with a card. The owners are quite simply losing
money, not just in potential customers, but in the food they pack
up and then cant send out the window. Each disappointed customer
will also tell a handful of friends, and probably mention the
experience at least once at Facebook or Twitter, too. Its time for
this special place to recognize that credit cards are a must.
Another example is a small clothing company. Theyre so small that
they make most of their sales at craft fairs and festivals. They
tried taking credit cards before, using a manual card reader,
taking down a bunch of extra information, and then handing over the
goods and hoping the cards would work when they got back home and
put all the information into their account. It slowed them down,
losing them sales as people gave up and wandered off. It also made
them nervous, since they couldnt get immediate approval of the
cards and had to take all transactions on trust. The card reader
was a bother, too, and sometimes they couldnt even read the paper
slips they had to use. Times have changed. Wireless credit card
processing machines can fit in your cash box (or your pocket!) and
let you swipe cards and process them just as you would in a store.
Now everyone can use credit cards, even outdoors, without
electricity or phone lines. Our third example is a company that
makes very special items for brides. Their handmade veils and
accessories are unique and specially made for each bride. They dont
want to pay credit card fees, and they figure they dont have to
their customers cant get what they offer anywhere else. That used
to be true. Now, customers have far more choices. Online shopping
lets your customers go anywhere in the world in search of the items
you offer, so being the only place in town is no longer enough.
When brides can shop for handmade veils online in their pajamas,
and pay for it easily with their credit cards, the only place in
town is inconvenient by comparison. Whether you offer a product or
a service, your customers expect you to be able to accept credit
cards. Fortunately, credit card processing has become painless.

Can Your Small Business Afford Not to Accept Credit Cards?
Small businesses arent always eager to accept credit cards
and online payments. The merchant account fees can mount up for a
small company, the new regulations can be confusing, and some small
businesses would rather avoid it. Realistically, credit cards are
an essential part of business now. Fewer customers use checks,
debit cards are more common than cash for younger customers, and
nearly all businesses now need to be able to accept payment online.
This is a good thing, really. If youve been avoiding turning to
online payment processing, consider these facts: Online payments
can save you money. Some estimates have found that physical billing
can cost up to three times as much as online payment processing.
Businesses like the convenience of being able to pay with a credit
card and track all their expenditures in that way. Online payments
are also more secure than payments by check; fewer people have
access to the data with a secure payment gateway than with a
physical object like a check. Multiple studies have shown that
people spend more using credit cards than they do with cash or
checks. Want to increase the average transaction at your
website? Accept credit cards. Get a faster turnaround on payments.
This helps your companys cash flow and reduces time spent on
collection efforts. Fortunately, customers are also more loyal to
companies that offer them the option of paying online. The
convenience is perceived as a benefit in and of itself. Credit
cards are a greener choice. Let your customers pay with credit
cards through a secure payment gateway instead of by responding to
a paper bill with a check, and you can reduce your companys carbon
footprint significantly. Choosing the right merchant services
provider is the key to getting a good return on your investment
when it comes to credit card processing. Merchant Perfect, a
merchant services provider based in Miami, suggests comparing not
only the fees certainly a key criterion for choosing a provider but
also the services included. Sometimes small businesses look only at
the start up costs and dont notice the range of add-on fees a
provider will charge as the business grows. Seeking a provider with
the level of service you expect to require can help the small
business avoid costly and inconvenient changes in the
future.

How Credit Card Processing Works
Have you ever wondered how credit card processing services
work? With the average credit card transaction there are six
participants in the transaction. the buyer the seller the acquiring
banks payment processor the credit card interchange the bank or
company who issued the buyers credit card the sellers acquiring
bank With online payment processing via Ecommerce trades, there is
an additional participant. The first step in an online payment is
the payment gateway, which initiates the online transaction. All
other steps are identical no matter where payment originates. A
customer who makes a payment online will have their payment first
go through the payment gateway, which will route the payment to the
applicable credit card processor for that type of card. The
processor passes the payment request on to the credit card
interchange. After the payment request clears through the
interchange it goes on through to the bank that issued the buyers
credit card. The available funds are verified to see if its safe to
pass payment on up the line. The card number, the expiration date
and other information are also verified at this time for security
purposes. If payment is approved then the signal gets sent back
down the line to let the merchant know the transaction has been
approved for payment. Meanwhile, payment is made by the buyers card
issuer to the sellers merchant account provider, the sellers
merchant account provider accepts payment, and eventually the
payment passes on to the sellers bank account. With the exception
of payment to the merchant, this whole process amazingly takes just
a few seconds. The actual payment to the merchant usually takes
place the next calendar day, depending on the card issuer. If you
have a Merchant Perfect merchant account all Visa, MasterCard, and
Discover, payments are transferred into your bank account the next
day. Each step in this process incurs a fee. Merchant account
providers pay these fees, and charge the seller a transaction fee
and a payment fee that is a percentage of the sale, which covers
the cost of all the fees down the line, and allows merchant account
providers to make a profit after paying overhead.

How to accept credit cards
Very little appears simpler than swiping your bank card at
your favourite list store, but the process is more difficult then
youd think whenever youre standing to the other side from the

the credit card transaction, and its necessary for any business to

Bank or Merchant Services
Do You Need a Bank or a Merchant Services Account? As a small
business owner, you certainly need a bank account; no one is
suggesting that you put your money under the mattress. But when it
comes to accepting credit cards, you have other options. The bank
where you have your business account may be the first place you
think of when youre ready to take credit card payments. However,
there are some aspects to bank-based credit card processing
services that may make your bank less than ideal for credit card
processing. For one thing, if youre a small business or a new
business, they may not approve you for their credit card processing
services, even if you have been a good customer. Their prices may
also be higher. Any credit card processing service will charge a
fee for their services, but a bank may charge you extra fees. You
may also have to arrange for an online payment gateway separately
and at an additional cost. In fact, if you need a credit card
processing machine for your brick and mortar business, plus the
ability to accept payments online or by phone, you may face
multiple separate fees. Some businesses work with their banks to
accept credit card payments at their store or office location, and
use a third party processor such as PayPal to accept online
payments. A third party processor gives you an account which you
can use to accept credit cards. Usually, there will be a button on
your website that takes the shopper to the third party site, where
they complete their transaction. The money goes to your account
with the third party, and you can transfer it to your bank account.
Youll face more fees, of course, but there are other drawbacks,
too. Some shoppers are alarmed by having to go to another site
instead of paying directly on your website. Third party sites may
take twice as long as a merchant services provider or bank to get
your payments to you, creating issues with cash flow. Some also
have transaction limits or will flag or even refuse larger
transactions. Many require extra fees for certain credit cards.
Merchant services accounts are usually the best option for small
businesses needing credit card processing. These services
specialize in processing credit card payments for small businesses,
and usually provide support for online payments as well as payments
at your physical location. Some also accept wireless processing, a
help for companies with remote sales people or those who sell at
trade shows. The one clear advantage of sticking with your bank may
be that you have people to talk with when you have a question. Some
merchant services companies offer this type of support as well. For
example, Merchant Perfect, a merchant services company based in
Miami, provides live chat at their website as well as tech support
